Surprising Facts About The Foods You Think Are Healthful!, By Therese Griffin Hicks, RN, DC, FIACA

After receiving feedback from readers on which subjects they most enjoyed, we decided to do some more comparisons of apparently healthful food choices. For instance, you might think when choosing between a turkey wrap or roast beef and gravy that the turkey wrap would be the best choice. Generally speaking, a turkey wrap starts with a white fl our Surprising Facts About The Foods You Think Are Healthful! tortilla (which we love here but that doesn’t change the facts about processed white fl our). Then frequently mayo or a fatty dressing is added. Also, many places use a processed cheese rather than a naturally aged cheese, and if there is a veggie it's usually iceberg lettuce that is essentially indigestible fiber. All this according to the book Eat This Not That rolls in at 375 calories and 14 grams of fat. Surprisingly, a few slices of lean roast beef with a light gravy, is higher in protein, folic acid and iron, and comes in at 240 calories and 11 grams of fat. Another very surprising comparison is between a serving of mashed potatoes and a serving of raw carrots with ranch dressing. If it takes ranch dressing to get the raw veggies down its likely not worth it. Two ounces of ranch has more calories and fat than an entire scoop of mashed potatoes. (Assuming you don't drown the potatoes in butter and sour cream). The carrots with ranch come in at 230 calories and 15 grams of fat, where the potatoes come in at 170 calories and 8 grams of fat. That really is surprising. Now, raw veggies (especially organic ones), are really good for us so finding a way to eat them with very little high fat dressing would be the way to go. Olive oil and a flavored rice vinegar is hard to beat and adds good fats to your diet. Here’s another if you are eating at KFC. When choosing between a Chicken Pot Pie be aware that it packs 770 calories, 40 grams of fat (14 of those the bad "trans fats") and 1680 mg. of sodium. Try choosing two crispy strips with mashed potatoes (even with gravy). This still comes in at 380 calories, 18 grams of fat, and 1360 mg, of sodium. So, till next time, remember… It’s your body, your health and your choice…and, if you are making choices for children all the more reason to ….Choose Well!

Summer is the best time to satisfy your sweet tooth with fruit instead of sugar. There's nothing really wrong with sugar, but it's very easy to overeat. And usually where there’s sugar, there’s fat. The combination comes in many forms…but most often baked goods. (I’m not going to name them…you know what I mean.) Please remember, if you're diabetic, sugar is sugar whether it is refi ned table sugar, molasses, maple syrup, honey, modified corn starch or fresh, frozen, and dried fruit. So be cautious. But, fruit has fi ber and substance. Fruit is pretty and pleasing to eat. Fruit is a good way to satisfy cravings for sweetness without sabotaging your smart food plan or the benefi ts of your workout. Take care of your hard-earned health. And in the summer, fruit thrives in all its glorious plenty. My sister, Patty, is a cooked fruit fan and I’m a fresh fruit fan. Either way, fruit is good food. Here are some easy suggestions for fabulous fruit fare: 1. Eat an apple in the afternoon for a quick and easy pick me up. Or any fresh fruit any time of day…combine different varieties for color and taste. One of my favorite fruit treats is plain nonfat Greek yogurt mixed with frozen berries (I like all different kinds). 2. Baked Bananas - Lightly oil a shallow baking dish with cooking spray. Halve lengthwise 4 bananas and arrange in dish. Pour some lemon juice and a tiny amount of honey over the bananas. Sprinkle with some cinnamon, nutmeg, and powdered ginger (sweet spices). Bake at 325 degrees for 15 minutes. 3. Citrus Floats – Put a scoop of any fl avor sorbet in a tall glass. Fill with diet lemon-lime soda or seltzer water and garnish with lemon and lime wedges. Enjoy!
