Turning Cans into Cash for the Phoenix Zoo

Twirlers

Early in the school year when classes chose a community project, the second graders at Florence Unified School District's Anthem K-8 School decided their project would not only help the community but would also be environmentally friendly! The 75+ students began collecting aluminum cans from anywhere they could – families, friends, neighbors, other students, and teachers. Their goal was to raise as much money as they could to donate to the Phoenix Zoo. Their project culminated on Saturday, April 4, when the students, their teachers, and their families visited the zoo and presented $141.65 to delighted Phoenix Zoo officials. Not to be outdone by their children, many of the parents and grandparents who brought their children to the zoo added their own contributions, as did onlookers not connected with the group but interested in what the group was doing! "We divided what we collected among the students so each one could put some money into the jar in front of the zoo officials and experience a true connection to the donation." said teacher Desiree Murdock. "That was exciting enough for them, but when their parents and grandparents started handing them $5, $10, and $20 bills to add to the collection, their excitement went off the charts!"
