Holy Angels Celebrate Earth Day

Earth day winners

Pictured:Winners were 8th grade student Sarah Thygerson and 2nd grader student Maddie Belling: The students and faculty of Holy Angels School celebrated Earth Day by taking the St Francis Pledge to Care for Creation and the Poor. This pledge is a commitment to examine our lifestyle and demonstrate in concrete ways our concern for God's creation and the poor, so that the poor do not unduly suffer. Care for Creation is interwoven throughout the curriculum and the commu- nity life of the school. Several years ago our students took on a civics project that resulted in adding the following to our handbook: Everyone who is a part of our school community must show respect and good stewardship of the earth by keeping the school clean and by recycling all that we are able. The County provided recycling containers for paper products, and our community has made great effort to recycle all paper products. Additionally, we have been using compostable and biodegradable cafeteria trays made from 100% bagasse (sugar cane). The school feels that small changes have big results, and one of the small changes the students in grades 4 and up made this year was to switch to mechanical pencils. The students also took part in a contest to illustrate the components of the Pledge.
