Globe Schools Budgets Revised, By Ted Lake

Members of the Globe School Board unanimously approved another revision of the maintenance of operating budget for the Globe Public Schools. This marks the fourth time there have been revisions in the district's current 2008- 2009 budget. Dr. Jeff Walker, Director of Business Operations for the local district explained this latest revision amounts to a reduction of $400,000 because the state Arizona has dipped in- to Globe's budget in addition to an adjustment for attendance. Walker told board members his goal is to carry over the full 4% to next year and will be working towards that accomplishment. He said the district will not receive the funding from the state until October 15 so there could be changes prior to the funding coming through. Meanwhile, it was announced the Globe Public schools have received more grants and awards. These include two donations for Globe High Baseball which include $150 from Guayo’s on the Trail and $100 from the Blake & Carpenter Agency. Kroger (Fry’s Markets) has donated $500 to the Copper Rim School's Music Program while the Dream Manor Inn has given $1,167 for the school district's 2009 Employee Appreciaton Program.

Wal-Mart Awards More Than $150,000 in Scholarships

Retailer’s foundation continues commitment to education: BENTONVILLE, Ark., MAY 13, 2009 --- To offset rising tuition costs, the Wal-Mart Foundation will award $150,000 in academic scholarships to help ease financial concerns for 50 college-bound students in Arizona. Each student will receive a $3,000 Sam Walton Community Scholarship to use toward tuition, fees, books, and on-campus room and board for the 2009-2010 academic year. Part of $8 million that the Wal-Mart Foundation gave nationally to college-bound students, the scholarships awarded in Arizona hold an added importance this year when higher education endowments are shrinking and states are cutting back on appropriations. Even more, colleges are dealing with decreased funding this year and requests for financial aid are expected to grow by 20 percent, according to the National Association of College and University Business Officers. The recipients of the 2009 Sam Walton Community Scholarship are students across the country who have excellent academic scores, have shown financial need and are involved in their communities. This year’s scholarship recipients are from all 50 states, Washington , D.C. and Puerto Rico . Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and the Wal-Mart Foundation have a long history of supporting education initiatives and in 2008 contributed more than $67 million to support local schools and universities, student scholarships, educational organizations and more. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) and the Wal-Mart Foundation are proud to support the charitable causes that are important to customers and associates in their own neighborhoods. Through its philanthropic programs and partnerships, the Wal-Mart Foundation funds initiatives focused on creating opportunities in education, workforce development, economic opportunity, environmental sustainability, and health and wellness. From February 1, 2008 through January 31, 2009, Wal-Mart – and its domestic and international Foundations – gave more than $423 million in cash and in-kind gifts globally.
