"Spider,' a Pony from Old Dripping Springs, By Art Dalmolin and Jim Bywater

Art Dalmolin told CCN, "Jim Bywater and I were good friends. I bought this horse Spider from Mr. Cooley at Dripping Springs for $40. Jim and I broke him at the cement water tank in Dripping Springs." Jim Bywater remembered, "Spider was pretty hard to break, but he made a real good cowpony. I used to ride him almost every day while working on the Hagen Ranch at Government Springs. He was a good horse but he would try to throw you off now and then." "My dad and I were riding horses out in Dripping Springs one day, out on the old road to the Cowboy Mine above the vanadium mine. I was riding Spider. He tried to buck me off, but I stayed with him. When he quit bucking, I was sitting right up on the swells of my saddle. If he had made one more jump, he would have lost me, as he had thrown a cramp in my hip. We got straightened out and rode up to the old Cowboy Mine and looked things over. It turned out to be a real nice ride."
