Where the Poppies Came From, By Nick Rayes

Photo by Barbara Cox: I really enjoyed the article by Barbara Cox about the beautiful gold poppies that line the road between Claypool and Miami. If anyone wonders how these flowers got started, this is how: In the early 1960’s, at a Miami Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting at the Rok-Botum Cafe, it was voted to plant poppies. So the chamber secretary was directed to buy the seed, then give the seed to local Boy Scouts to scatter. How do I know? Because the secretary is my wife, formerly Betty Beneteau.
Heritage Residents get "Hooked" on Fishing Day!
It was a typical hot June summer day for most folks. But for the staff and residents at Heritage it was a fun-filled day packed with excitement and anticipation. It was time to grab that fishin' pole and go fishing! Residents were treated to an entire day of fun in the sun while fishing right in their own backyard! In the courtyard stood a large tank filled to the brim with crappie, blue gill and bass. It didn't take long for the residents to get "hooked" on this great past-time. On the side lines, other residents relaxed in the shade with cold juicy watermelon. People laughed and cheered as one by one, residents were shocked and awed by how easy it was to fish! This day was made possible due to the hard work and dedication of Activity Director, Julie Hazen. Two years ago residents expressed their desire to go fishing at the lake. Due to safety reasons, taking everyone to the lake was out of the question. So, Julie ingeniously thought of a way to bring the fish to them! With the help of Brown's Fish Farm in Pima, Az. Game & Fish Dept. and Bobby Mounce, who donated the tank- they were all able to help make a wish come true and create a memory to last a lifetime.
