2003 Tradition Team Doing Big Things as Big Kids, By M. Casillas
![]()
Pictured:2003 Tradition team poses after winning the Cal Ripkin State Championship. Roster includes: Manuel Ortega, Martin Chidez, Ruben Ybarra, Ryan Casillas, Brady Wager, Billy Kidd, Josh Cota, Zack Salcido, DW Warner, Tylor Kasmerick, Rico Larona, Gabe Valtierra, Kyle Quioz, Damon Valencia, Vince Buzan, Jon Nelson, Zach Powell, Coaches Brandon Powell, Kalvin Wager, Derek Casillas. With the high school baseball season now complete, I thought it would be interesting to take a look back at where many of this year’s Arizona State Baseball Champions found their calling. We all know how big of a role youth sports play in the development of both character and skill. But, for the players of the Globe-Miami Tradition, the time spent working hard as a kid has paid off greatly, in the form of high school State Championships and in some cases, a college education and possibly a shot at a career in the game they fell in love with years ago. Many of you may remember the success of the Tradition teams between 2001 and 2007. A stretch that saw our local kids play in five State Championship games, including the 2003 season, in which the team won the Cal Ripkin State Tournament and advanced to the Pacific Southwest Regionals, held in San Louis Obisbo (CA). The team also earned attention in 2002, when Globe-Miami was chosen as the host of the Regional Tournament. That year the Tradition defeated Guam in the first round en-route to a 4th place finish. Today, 16 players from that young group have now been part of an Arizona High School State CasillasBaseball Championship team, with the most recent coming at the hands of the Globe Tigers, who were crowned the 2009 State Champions, just two weeks ago. Several players have also earned the attention of Major League scout teams as well as college programs throughout the Nation. 16 Former Globe-Miami Tradition Players with High School State Championships: Manuel Ortega, Martin Chidez, & Ruben Ybarra - Superior High School 2007 1A State Champions.
