‘Incubator’ Hatches Business in Bylas

Posted: Wednesday, Nov 14th, 2012

Kodee Goseyun, director of the Bylass Incubator Program, announces the opening of two more suites in Wickiup Village.

SAN CARLOS — Wickiup Village, a new office building by the highway in Bylas, is already full. TANF (Suite A) and Bylas Wellness (Suite C-D) will have their Grand Opening on Nov. 16, 10 a.m. to noon, and the new restaurant (Suite F) will open in March.

Apache Baptist Academy (Suite E) now has 10 students, K-8.

Apache Rose Restoration shares Suite B with the Incubator Program.

Before Terry Rambler was Chairman of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, he saw a new-business “incubator” and said, “We need one of these in Bylas.” Federal and tribal money brought Kodee Goseyun to Bylas to direct the program. She’d been doing OK back East, but she missed the reservation and relatives, and here was a chance to help new enterprises get started.

At first, she didn’t even have an office. Later, she discovered Nnee Bich’o Nii Services and got some enthusiastic volunteers. Now, the whole Wickiup Village is populated with friendly neighbors.

Apache Rose restores buildings troubled by mold, fire, weather or asbestos. “It was a struggle to get them recognized,” says Kodee. They came before the tribal council five times. Now, two years later, the company has contracts with four reservations for hundreds of thousands of dollars in work. Also, the process for other new businesses has been streamlined to the office of General Manager Terry Jones.

Bylas residents are showing enthusiasm and imagination. Kodee’s volunteers wanted to send a bunch of folks down to see a Diamondbacks game, but the Tribal Council wouldn’t fund it - too frivolous. Kodee just asked her workers, “Well, how will you raise the money?” They brainstormed, got busy, succeeded, and felt empowered.

Recently the U.S Tennis Association donated a bunch of rackets. Tennis in Bylas? Why not? There’s a whole new world of possibilities!
