Globe Balks at Supporting Resolution

GLOBE — Anti-Resolution Copper forces from Superior and San Carlos attended the Globe City Council meeting on March 12, and the expected support for the Oak Flats land swap (allowing a huge new copper mine) took a different turn.

After hearing opposition speeches, Council members said they wanted to research the bill more, before making a decision. Mayor Wheeler’s suggestion that a Resolution spokesman be heard later was well received, but Apache leaders were encouraged to return for that too.

San Carlos Apache Tribal Chairman Terry Rambler said the “foundation” of his opposing a new mine was “the religious aspect.” He said “desecrating” Oak Flats, “an area of great significance,” would be like digging under the Vatican or the Salt Lake City temple.
