Deadline for staircase beautification projects extended

Calling all artists! Proposals to beautify Globe’s historic staircases – starting with the Silver King stairs (off Broad Street behind the Silver King Building) - are being invited, and the deadline for design submissions has been extended to Jan. 31, 2022. Proposals for the Silver King stairs, and our other historic staircases, could include decorative art on the stair risers (paint, mosaic, etc.), embellishments to the hand rails, light installations, sculpture and other creative ideas.

The projects can range in expense from $2,000 to $10,000, with the artist’s fee incorporated into the proposed amount. The final decision for selection will be made by the I Art Globe jury.

The competition is open to all amateur or professional artists (local, national and international) working in all media. All forms of art that beautify or enhance our historic staircases will be considered. Entrants must be 18 or older to apply.

Artists must submit their mock-up proposals for the Silver King stairs in person or via email to Regina Ortega-Leonardi at leonardir0012gmail.com by midnight on Jan. 31, 2022. If you have questions, contact the Globe Historic Staircase Urban Trail Project Hotline at 808-373-0032.

Selected artists will be featured on I Art Globe and the City of Globe social media sites, as well as in local news media (newspapers, radio). They will also be highlighted at our Stairizona Race to be held during the Poppyfest Celebration scheduled for April 1-2, 2022.

The staircase project was initiated to support physical and emotional health, as well as community connection, by encouraging residents to get outside, walk and interact socially. Because we have lost access to most of our  trails due to recent mine closure, fires and floods, we are creating a new inner-city trail system with a focus on the use of Globe’s 100-plus-year-old historic staircases, as well as the Globe historic downtown region.

This project is one of the I Art Globe initiative’s “twelve public arts projects in twelve months” plan. I Art Globe focuses on infusing hope in the face of the health and natural disaster challenges of the last 18 months. The beautification of the historic staircases is one of the initiative’s larger projects.

One staircase, one muralist. It could be you! Contact Regina Ortega-Leonardi for more information.
