PHOENIX – For her contributions in education, Catherine A. Steele, former San Carlos Unified School District # 20 Superintendent, will be among four Living Legacies and four Historical Legacies added to the Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame this month.
Steele, the first San Carlos Apache woman to serve as Superintendent of San Carlos Unified School District #20, has left a lasting legacy in the field of education and contributed to the history and diversity of Arizona. In a virtual ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 21, she and her fellow Hall of Fame inductees will join the more than 100 women honored by the Hall.
Steele earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree from Arizona State University and a Masters in Educational Leadership degree from Northern Arizona University, as well as superintendent and principal certifications.
Her career in education started in 1965, as an instructional aide at Rice Elementary School in San Carlos. Steele went to serve as Rice Elementary’s principal and, in 2013, as Associate Superintendent of San Carlos Unified School District #20. In 2014 she moved up to Superintendent, a position she held until retiring in June 2016.
