“Who Found This Place? – A History of Tonto National Monument”

Posted

The Tonto cliff dwellings have been “discovered,” explored, developed as a tourist attraction and preserved for scientific research. The public is invited to a free presentation on Friday, February 17, at 6 p.m. at Bullion Plaza Cultural Center & Museum, 150 N. Plaza Circle in Miami. Presenter Will Moore will review the history of Tonto National Monument from the time of Kit Carson in the 1830s to the opening of the National Park Service visitor center in the 1960s.

Will has been a volunteer at Tonto National Monument since 2011, leading tours and providing information for visitors. He has researched and written about the history of the National Park Service in the Southwest. Prior to retirement in 2010, Will had a long career with the Arizona Education Association. He and his wife make their home in Mesa.

Please look for these Second Friday events starting up here at Bullion Plaza Museum. Returning from the COVID hiatus, and since the City of Globe has begun their own First Friday events, we have chosen Second Fridays as a way to remember when they are!
