Sarah Josephine Bush, age 97, of San Carlos, Arizona passed away peacefully at her home in San Carlos on Oct. 21, 2022. She was born Oct. 6, 1925 to Emma Case and William Stevens in San Carlos. She was the youngest of 10 children.
Sarah is preceded in death by her husband Curley Bush Sr., her sons Jerry Bush and Dale Bush, and her brothers and sisters Jess Stevens, Sam Stevens, Jimmy Stevens, Ray Stevens, Henry Stevens, George Stevens, Carl Stevens, Virginia Patten and Sadie Kniffin.
Sarah lived on the San Carlos Apache Reservation all her life. She was a homemaker and dedicated to her family in teaching them the Apache tradition and culture. She was active with her family in the traditional sunrise ceremonies and an avid seamstress in making Apache camp dresses. Sarah also enjoyed sports and loved to watch her grandchildren play basketball and baseball. She also loved watching the Arizona Diamondbacks and Phoenix Suns games.
Sarah is survived by her children Carol Hudson, John Bush, Curley Bush, Jr., Tommy Bush, Barbara Delma, Diane Key and Martha Bush; 24 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Sarah was the oldest elder on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. Her family, friends and the San Carlos community will miss her greatly. Her family all say she lived a good life and saw many changes in her community and the world.
A wake was held on Friday, October 28 at 3 p.m. at the Bush residence in Peridot, Arizona. Funeral services were on Saturday, October 29 at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church. Burial followed at the San Carlos Cemetery in San Carlos.
